This week on the Australian Bite, milk in Australia has never been cheaper, with the two major supermarket chains slogging it out in a price war. But what about the dairy farmers?   Also on the program, the police take on a team of international students in a community cricket match, and Olympic Bobsleigher Jeremy Rolleston, talks about his new book,  A Life that Counts

Dairy farmers worried by milk price wars

Australians are big milk drinkers, and milk in Australia is very cheap right now with the two major supermarket chains, Coles and Woolworths, charging just a dollar a litre for their house brand milk. This so-called milk price-war, started earlier this year when Coles reduced its milk to a dollar a litre – about half the price of the well-known branded products. Fearing a big drop in sales, Woolworths was more or less forced to match the price. It’s estimated that the supermarkets are absorbing losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars per week to sell the milk at that price. But while the supermarkets are currently wearing the cost, some dairy farmers believe they’ll be the ones to pay in the end, when their milk supply contracts come up for renewal. David Mark reports.

Police v International students at the Community Cup

A team of 11 international students launched a searing attack on the South Australian police cricket team last weekend. The students opening bowler sent one disappointed police officer straight back to the pavilion as they opened the Community Cup cricket match with a first ball wicket. It’s the second time the group of University students have played against the South Australian Police team. Not only was the match entertaining, but crowds were treated to a dancing display and the South Australian Police Band before the two teams took to the field. Brett Williamson spoke to the two team captains, Hars Imran from the international student side, and Detective Brevet Sergeant Peter Gladigau from the Sturt CIB.

Living “A Life that Counts”

Jeremy Rolleston represented Australia in bobsleigh at the winter Olympics in Torino, Italy in 1996, and Vancouver, Canada, in 2010. He’s just released a book, called A Life that Counts, which he describes as a handbook and guide for success. It’s based on his own experiences – including a horror smash on the bobsleigh track at the Vancouver Olympics – as well as the thoughts and experiences of ten prominent Australian sports and business people. I spoke to Jeremy Rolleston about the book and began by asking him how he got into bobsleigh racing.

More information on the book is available at Jeremy Rolleston’s website
