Feeling hungry?  Well hopefully not so much as the miserable bunch of escapees featured in the new Australian film Van Diemen’s Land.  The film tells the story of Alexander Pearce, the only survivor of a small group convicts who escaped into the Tasmanian wilderness and turned to cannibalism, and we meet the film’s director, Jonathan auf der Heide on this week’s Australian Bite.  We also find out why many former inmates of Australia’s immigration detention centres are breathing a collective sigh of relief, and hear how Australia’s Royal Flying Doctor Service has hit the runway in a popular mobile phone game.

Should "adult" magazines be displayed in newsagents, petrol stations and corner shops?

In Australia, a range of so-called “adult” magazines are commonly displayed in newsagencies, corner shops and petrol stations.  But many people argue that  they shouldn’t be.  This week on the Bite, a discussion of some of the issues around magazine classification and availability  in Australia.  We also hear about a new documentary called “Contact” which tells the remarkable story of first contact between white patrol officers and a group of aboriginal people in the Western Australian desert in 1964.

A feast of film on this week’s Australian Bite.  Actor Eric Bana talks about his new film “Love the Beast” which tells the story of his 25 year love affair with his 1973 XB Ford Falcon Coupe.  We meet Simon Ford, the man behind Melbourne’s freshest new short film festival – Fedfest.  And also one of the filmmakers – Angie Black – whose film “Birthday Girl” is maybe not quite what you’d expect!
