Hong Kong’s High Court has ruled that a law banning foreign domestic workers from permanent residency in the city is unconstitutional.

The case was brought by a Filipino maid who’s lived in Hong Kong since 1986.

The Court ruled that immigration laws barring domestic workers — mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia — from settling permanently violated Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, known as the Basic Law.

Under the law, foreigners can apply to settle in Hong Kong after seven years of uninterrupted residency, but maids were specifically excluded.

Alan Leong is a senior counsel and a member of Hong Kong’s parliament, the Legislative Council.

Mr Leong, who’s also leader of the Civic Party, does NOT expect a sudden influx of foreign migrants.
