There have been dramatic political developments in Papua New Guinea, where the Supreme Court ruled former long-time leader Sir Michael Somare is to be reinstated as prime minister.

In a 3-2 decision, the justices ruled there was no vacancy in the Prime Minister’s office when Sir Michael’s successor, Peter O’Neill, was elected earlier this year. It further stated that Mr O’Neill’s election was unconstitutional.

But earlier in the day, Peter O’Neill’s government passed retrospective laws legalising the removal of Sir Michael from leadership.

Tracee Hutchison spoke to PNG correspondent Liam Fox, and constitutional expert Dr Ray Anere, with the National Research Institute of PNG.
