Canadian company Nautilus Minerals says that their new mining techniques will cause very minimal damage to waters in Papua New Guinea, however locals fear otherwise.

These fears are confirmed by a new report, “Out of Our Depth: Mining the Ocean Floor in Papua New Guinea ” which argues that because there is not yet a full understanding of how deep sea ecosystems work, no one can be sure about the impact that mining will have.

The author of the report, Helen Rosebaum spoke to Heather Jarvis.
