Since WWI, Australia has been sending artists into war zones so they can document the lives of Australian troops on the frontline.
Ben Quilty is Australia’s latest war artist, having spent a month with Australian troops in Afghanistan late last year.
The Archibald prize-winning artist lived alongside troops in Tarin Kowt, Kandahar and Kabul – sketching and photographing soldiers, machinery and the landscape.
He is now working in his New South Wales studio to finish 38 sketches and five paintings for Australia’s War Memorial.
