A leading Australian academic says Australia should make the most of the opportunity afforded by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s reformist leadership to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Damien Kingsbury from Deakin University says the end of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s presidency in 2014 leaves an uncertain future for Indonesia – a country that has the potential to be an economic and political heavyweight in the region.

The paper comes as the Australian Government reveals an interim strategic defence paper looking at the strengths and weaknesses of Australian forces.

It recommends major boost to Australia’s naval presence in its northern waters.
