The man widely expected to become China’s next President, Xi Jinping has arrived in Washington for four-day visit.
He’ll meet the US President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, and has already been spruiking the importance of economic ties between the two countries.
Xi is currently serving as China’s Vice President and will become head of the communist party later this year.
It makes for interesting timing for such a high profile visit – coming in the wake of America’s move last year to re-align its international focus on the Asia-Pacific, in what many analysts viewed as a move to contain China’s growing influence in the region.
Tracee Hutchison spoke to Dr Paul Monk, the author of a book on China’s growth and ambitions, the the former head of china analysis at the Defence Intelligence Organisation and co-founder of Austhink Consulting Pty Ltd
