The incoming Chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Fatou Bensouda says there’s a reason the ICC is focused on Africa.

The Gambian-born lawyer has been deputy Prosecutor in the prosecutions division of the ICC since 2004 and is hosting a forum in Melbourne tonight as a guest of the University of Melbourne’s School of International Law.

Mrs Bensouda says tens of millions of Africans have been displaced by conflict, so the ICC’s focus is warranted.

And she highlighted the upcoming verdict of Thomas Lubanga, a former leader of a militia group at war in the North Eastern district of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Who is facing charges of enlisting and conscripting children under the age of 15 and using them to participate actively in hostilities.
