Philippine police have launched a new taskforce to crack down on kidnappings for ransom.

Hundreds of locals and a number of foreigners have been kidnapped over the last decade by criminal syndicates or Muslim militant groups.

It’s also common for small abduction gangs to “sell” their captives to more powerful organisations such as the southern militants, the Abu Sayyaf.

The new taskforce will focus solely on abductions, and it will have a bigger budget than the body it replaces, the Police Anti-Crime and Emergency Response force.

But will it work?
