In Papua New Guinea, the crisis sparked by last week’s attempted military mutiny is over, with the soldiers involved granted amnesty.

The Defence minister Belden Namah this afternoon addressed members of the Royal Pacific Islands Regiment at Tarauma Barracks.

Last week around 30 of them briefly held the Defence force commander hostage and demanded the reinstatement of Sir Michael Somare as Prime Minister.

Mr Namah told them they would be granted amnesties but he warned there would be no second chance.

The mutiny may be over, but PNG politics is by no means stable, and the people are fed up, as Paul Barker, executive director of the Institute of National Affairs in Port Moresby explains.
