Debunking Megapixels

Buying a digital camera can be a daunting task. Beyond the many different brands on offer is the array of choice for size and price too. Even if you decide to go for a compact camera over a more professional DSLR, you may find that the only thing way you can easily differentiate between two similar cameras is the amount of megapixels (MP) they have. But what is a megapixel? Why do they keep going up? Why did my 3MP camera take nicer photos than my newer 7MP one, or is that just my imagination?
The amount of megapixels available on cameras has been going up for a while now, and Olympus Cameras executive Akira Watanabe recently stated that twelve megapixels is “enough for covering most applications most customers need.” Could it be that the megapixel race is over?
