This week in the Tech Stream, the latest on the National Broadband Network in Australia. We’ll find out why there is opposition to the government’s plan to split Telstra, which it argues is essential to creating a more level playing field. A new undersea internet cable is being built to link New Zealand and the US, but could it also connect countries in the Pacific along the way?
We’ll shine a light on new solar panels, developed in Australia, that promise to be more efficient and cheaper to produce than current technology. And an update on the Mariposa botnet and calls for computer manufacturers to be held responsible for selling products vulnerable to attacks from cyber criminals. This week in the Tech Stream: Apple unveil their latest, “must-have” device – the iPad. Technology journalist Danny Gorog joins us with all the details. The full interview with Danny and links to some of the other media coverage is in our blog post from yesterday.
We also crack open our crystal balls, with another look at the top technology trends and ideas for this year and into the next decade and beyond. We’ll hear from Stephen Prentice, VP and fellow at Gartner, the technology research and advisory company.
And finally Bajo from Good Game on ABC TV returns to forecast the video games trends and releases we’ll be talking about and playing in the year ahead.

Lars from Google in the Nightlife

Brother Lars and Jens Rasmussen are the brains behind the now ubiquitous online navigation system Google Maps. Their mapping technology company, Where 2 Technologies, was bought by Google in 2004 and they were brought into the fold to turn their ideas into what we now know as Google Maps. Soon they were thinking of new ideas to pursue, and are now following Jens’ suggestion to create a new way to communicate online. That tool, developed in Sydney, is called Google Wave. It was unveiled earlier this year and will be opened up to a select few users at the end of the month.
Lars Rasmussen joined Tony Delroy and Pall Wallbank in ABC Local Radio’s Nightlife program on Thursday last week. He fielded calls from listeners and spoke at length about the development of Google Maps and gave some fresh insights into Google Wave.
I posted on twitter that this interview was happening and got some requests to hear it. Tony and his team were kind enough to allow me to post an edited highlights of the program which you can hear via the MP3 link above.
