Flier-English

AngkorOne.com is a new web-portal and social networking website in Cambodia which is hoping to attract Khmer language speakers from around the world, and maybe even challenge the dominance of Western services like Facebook. But unlike some of its competitors it’s also focused on social-outreach programs and supporting Cambodia’s tourism industry.

The founder and CEO of AngkorOne is Steven Path. He was born in Cambodia but moved to the United States at the age of 7.  He has returned to his country of birth and is excited by the opportunities in his fast-growing, youthful nation.

Follow the MP3 link above to listen to our chat, or ‘right-click’ and ‘save link’ to download the audio. Thanks to Alex Khun from our Khmer language service at Radio Australia for organising this interview.

The fictitious babel fish. An image form the BBC TV production of Douglas Adam’s Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Its a special Tech Stream program this week with a focus on language translation.   We’re not quite at the stage yet where we can put a babel fish in our ears and understand every language on the planet, but we’re making some smaller breakthroughs online which are making communications across languages or access to international web content a lot easier. Listen with the MP3 link above or find out more after the jump…

Tech Stream 003Listen and Downlaod

In the Tech Stream radio and podcast program this week we chat with Danny Gorog about new Apple desktops and the Safari browser; think about green technology with sustainability expert Tony Hodgson; join Kate Sawrey from Triple J’s Hack behind the scenes with Aussie indie games companies; and Georgia Webster gives us the lowdown on textonyms.  Use the MP3 link in this story or to the right to hear the full program.

We ran out of time to cover the rumours overnight about Youtube being blocked in China, and the announcement that the Beatles are coming to your gaming console in September.  But apparently we can report that ninety-five percent of mobile phones in hospitals are infected with at least one kind of bacteria. Gross!

Tech JargonListen and Downlaod

27 February 2009

Listen and download: MP3

Keeping up with the language of online and mobile culture can be a difficult task.  But to help guide us in this journey through shifting cultures and communication we have our resident language trend-spotter Georgia Webster.

Georgia has ended up being a manager-type at SYN, Melbourne’s youth community broadcaster, but still retains her love of the studio.  She’s also a language nerd with a fairly severe addiction to ‘teh internets’.

We chatted today about technical jargon in general, and next time we’ll be tackling the world of texting and sms.  If you have something to contribute to the discussion, or that you’d like Georgia to explore, leave us a comment below.
