This week in the Tech Stream, the latest on the National Broadband Network in Australia. We’ll find out why there is opposition to the government’s plan to split Telstra, which it argues is essential to creating a more level playing field.  A new undersea internet cable is being built to link New Zealand and the US, but could it also connect countries in the Pacific along the way?

We’ll shine a light on new solar panels, developed in Australia, that promise to be more efficient and cheaper to produce than current technology.  And an update on the Mariposa botnet and calls for computer manufacturers to be held responsible for selling products vulnerable to attacks from cyber criminals.  Finally Bajo joins us with a review of the multiplayer-focused war-game Battlefield: Bad Company 2.  Full details after the jump, or follow the MP3 link above to hear the program.

We’ve got our head in the clouds this week in the Tech Stream. There’s a buzz around the term “cloud computing” and I lost count how many times it was mentioned at CeBIT Australia 2009 last week in Sydney.  I spoke with two local businesses on the exhibition floor about how they’re providing solutions for those wishing to work “in the cloud” and luckily they both offered to explain what the term “cloud computing” actually means.

Tech Stream 013Listen and Downlaod

15 May 2009

Listen and download: MP3

In the Tech Stream this week we’re at CeBIT Australia 2009, which is a massive information and communications technology (ICT) event in Sydney.  I’ve been posting, tweeting and filing audio from the conference all week, and today we catch up with Dr David Skellern from NICTA; Peter Harrison from Austrade; Geoff McQueen from Hiive Systems; the Australian and New Zealand web development teams battling in the FullCodePress competition; and finally Christoper Hire from 2ThinkNow who sums up some of the ideas and discussions that took place at CeBIT.

We’ll have more from the conference and exhibition next week as well.  Thanks to all the people who helped organise interviews for me, or gave up their time to speak with me during the week.

You can listen to the full Tech Stream program with the MP3 link above or the “Listen Now” link on the right. Feel free to comment on any of these stories or suggest something we can follow up in future programs. You can also subscribe to the podcast too!

In the Tech Stream this week we kick off with a look at the new Windows 7 “release candidate” from Microsoft which was made available for worldwide download on Tuesday. Renai Le May from IT news website ZDNet Australia has the lowdown.  Simon Goodrich from Portable Content joins me for breakfast and we discuss what happens to innovation during tough economic times. We also have a story about what will happen to the popular .tv domain name should the Pacific nation of Tuvalu sink beneath the rising seas. And finally we have Bajo from Good Game with his thoughts on why some games get better with age (much like a fine wine) while others just get worse over time.

It took us a while, but finally we have our filthy mits on Amazon’s new e-Book reader the Kindle 2. The reason for the delay is that it is actually not for sale anywhere but the USA. That’s right, in spite of all the tech-hype around the gadget, Americans are the only people able to buy it and use it to its full potential.

Battery Breakthroughs

16 March 2009

electriccar

ABC News Online reported late last week that researchers in the US have developed a new lithium ion battery that is smaller and lighter than those used today and can recharge in seconds.  This could be especially important for electric cars where, rather than waiting hours for the car battery to recharge, it could take as long as filling the tank with petrol.  The full story is online and PM on ABC Radio also covered the breakthrough, which you can listen to as well.
