In the Tech Stream this week – behind the long awaited study into the implementation of a national broadband network (NBN) in Australia, which suggests the government can build the infrastructure without Telstra, and deliver it to more people for less than was thought; we also take a look at the clean and green technologies that are getting investors excited… and the part nanotechnology is playing in their development; plus the big winners in this year’s Academy Awards for websites, the Webbys…  Find out via the MP3 link above, or read on for more information.

Tech Stream 048Listen and Downlaod

One of the many sessions taking place at The Internet Show in Melbourne, Australia this week.

This week in the Tech Stream we take time to talk about the gentle art of doing business online in 2010. We’ll meet some of the speaker from the recent Internet Show in Melbourne who tell us about the strategies being adopted by businesses to drive sales on the web, and analyze the behaviour of their customers.  We’ll also spend some time talking about how the rise of Facebook and Twitter is impacting on companies and brands.

We’ll revisit a news story from last week about the possibility that Bebo could be sold off or shut down by their parent company AOL.  It was very popular in New Zealand and the Pacific for a while, so what happens to all of the contacts, photos, videos and personal information people have stored there if it closes.

There’s an update on new measures being introduced in South Korea to try and curb the rising number of citizens addicted to the internet; and Bajo joins as with a review of the open world game Just Cause 2. Hear the program from the link above or read on for details.

Apple introduces us to the iPadListen and Downlaod

iPad image from apple.com.au

At least a few of the rumours were true:  Apple did indeed unveil their latest portable device today. It’s not called the iSlate or the iTablet though.  It’s not being billed as an eBook reader either, although it does do that.  It might even give the Amazon Kindle a run for its money.  It’s the latest in a fairly unsuccessful line of tablet PCs but it almost needs a catergory of its own. Its called, simply, the iPad.  That’s a picture of it above.  And yes, it’s like a hotted-up version of the iPod Touch.  Or big iPhone without the phone.  It’s coming in March and it could signal a huge change in the way we think about portable devices and even personal computing in general.

Technology journalist and keen Apple-watcher Danny Gorog joined me earlier today to chat about this flashy new gadget, follow the MP3 link above to hear our conversation. Or read on for a summary of some of the more interesting media coverage.

Cracks appear in China’s Green Dam

16 June 2009

It seems having the most sophisticated internet filtering and blocking system in the world is simply not enough for the authorities in China. Now they are seeking to implement a more thorough and universal solution at the user-end which they say is aimed at blocking access to pornographic and violence-oriented websites. But of course it’s being viewed, both inside and outside China, as a bid at mass censorship and a threat to personal privacy. More after the jump…

Electronic waste waiting to be recycled. Photo from Flickr by Eric Dykstra.

We’re marking World Environment Day in the Tech Stream this week.  Jeff Angel, Executive Director of the Total Environment Centre tells us about Australia’s new electronic waste recycling scheme. Janet Leslie from Canon Australia explains their e-waste initiatives and ‘green’ calculators.  And Elanto Wijayono from Green Map Indonesia introduces us to Open Green Maps – a set of online tools to help communities map natural, cultural and sustainable resources in their area.

But we kick off the program with the blocking of websites like Twitter and Flickr in China this week.  Thursday was the 20th anniversary of the Chinese military’s bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square. Myself and Steve Holland from Connect Asia speak with a local Twitter user as well as Jeremy Goldkorn from Danwei.org and Beijing-based technology observer Kaiser Kuo.  Radio Australia News Online also has a great feature on the anniversary.   Lastly, technology journalist Adam Turner has the lowdown on Google Wave.

The entire program can be heard from the MP3 link at the top, and you can subscribe to the podcast with the link on the right.  Feel free to leave a comment below on any of the content in the Tech Stream this week.

CeBIT: Webciety and HiiveListen and Downlaod

cebitfloor_webciety_540

I spent a lot of time at CeBIT Australia 2009 in the Webciety area and met a lot of the teams whose web-based services were on display.  Next week in the Tech Stream we’ll meet up with two of them, Travellr and Devnet, but the buzz this year was around Hiive Systems.  The Australian startup won this year’s “Early Innovation” award for their service and client tracking software, Affinity.  Their founder and Managing Director is Geoff McQueen and I somehow managed to drag him away from prospective clients to talk about Hiive Systems and the Webciety concept.   You can listen to our chat with the MP3 link at the top of the story.
