Hacking in China, the internet in the Pacific, Microsoft and Yahoo cut a deal and updates to the Wii controller. Its all in the Tech Stream this week. You can hear the latest program with the MP3 link at the top of this story or to the right and keep reading for the full lowdown…
Stephanie March from RA’s Connect Asia program begins with a story on the steady growth of internet use in China. She speaks with Sally Wentworth, Public Policy Manager at the Geneva-based Internet Society and Jack Qiu, assistant professor at the School of Journalism & Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Matt Conway filed a report on so-called “hacking schools” in China and spoke with Jeremy Goldkorn from Danwei.org and Dr Asha Rao, senior lecturer on internet security from Melbourne’s RMIT University. China Daily reported earlier in the week on these “schools” although some worry that this description is an over-exaggeration.
We speak with IT journalist and security specialist Patrick Gray from Risky.Biz about the recent hacking of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) website and about mobile phone security flaws and issues. For some background on the hacking of the MIFF websites go to this story on ABC News Online.
Dr Jimmie Rogers, the Secretary General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) spoke to Jemima Garrett about the proposed SPIN submarine cable which is expected to link French Polynesia with New Caledonia and also the Pacific Islands in between. You can see a map of the proposed network at mahtin.com/spin and more on this at yourfibreopticnews.com with some recent background on the project at islandsbusiness.com
We then turn our attention to the recent Microsoft and Yahoo search deal with a story from Karon Snowdown featuring Steve Hodgkinson, the Asia Pacific Research Director for the IT consultancy Ovum and also Ben Bajarin, a Consumer technology and digital media analyst with Creative Strategies in California who spoke with ABC Radio National Breakfast. You can hear Fran Kelly’s full interview with Ben Bajarin on the RN Breakfast website.
And we finish with Bajo from Good Game on ABC TV and his review of Wii Sports Resort, a new game from Nintendo for the Wii console which uses the Wii Motion Plus controller add-on. But as you’ll hear he’s not that impressed by the game itself.
