The Melbourne GP. Stars Galore
26 March 2010
Our first day at the Melbourne Grand Prix yesterday was pretty wild. It was a big transformation from the day before, when teams were preparing in an atmosphere of a gathering thunderstorm.
Yesterday the proverbial thunderstorm of fans, drivers and hangers-on hit, and here are some of the photos of our side of it.
We started the day with a chat with the man at the head of the Australian Grand Prix, Drew Ward, who seemed amazingly calm considering the noise, the crowds and the financial fears that have been part of the GP over the last year.
Then the drivers started coming in. The experienced team at the helm of newbie constructor Lotus dropped by. The great Fin Heikki Kovalainen (left) and Italian Jarno Trulli.
That was a fun interview, especially when Adelaine asked Heikki if it was true that he was going to ask his fiancee to marry him. He was genuinely surprised and said that even his girlfriend didn’t know he was thinking about it. Oopsy. Another scoop for Radio Australia Today.
When then went to the Paddock to speak with the great Rubens Barrichello, and he proved just as charming, and candid, as we’d come to expect.
In all, a great day, except when Beverley and I tried to edge our way into a restricted media conference with Mark Webber. We ended up outside on the seats of our pants.
Ah well. We had to try.
